Enneagram and Parenting Workshops

The Enneagram for Therapists, Coaches & Spiritual Directors

Workshop is FULL.

This workshop is being offered in collaboration with David Daniels, MD, clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford Medical School, adjunct faculty at Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, a leading developer of the Enneagram system of nine personality styles, and co-author of the best seller, The Essential Enneagram. 30 units of CEU credit available for MFT's and LCSW's.

Prerequisite: Having taken the Enneagram Basic Workshop or having a working understanding of the Enneagram. It is also recommended that you are familiar with the Instinctual Subtypes.

David Daniels and Barbara Whiteside come together to present this powerful system for generating personal change, healing, and development "from the inside out." The Enneagram system as taught in the Narrative Tradition brings together theory with process to create remarkable change in our lives and the lives of our clients. We will focus on identifying, understanding, and working more effectively with clients of each Enneagram style. This advanced course is designed for those who want to deeply understand the core structure, belief, and adaptive strategy for each type and how to facilitate personal and relationship transformation. We will use lectures, exercises, client presentations, examples including guided interactions, and live panelists of the nine types sharing their experiences of working with therapists or coaches, both what was effective and what was not.

Dates: Every other Thursday morning, January 5th through May 10th.

Cost: $850 for the series (breaks down to $85 per 3 1/2 hour session). Includes continental breakfast and handouts. 30 hours of CEU credits available for MFT's and LCSW's for an additional charge of $50. $250 deposit required with registration.

Registration: Class size is limited to 16, and we are now FULL. To be added to a wait list, please email Barbara at barbara@whitesideworkshops.com

Enneagram Basic Workshop with Panels

Come to this lively, interactive and informative Enneagram weekend. You'll come away with a good idea of what your Type is and a sound understanding of the Enneagram system.

The Enneagram is a powerful and dynamic psychological, relational, and spiritual system that describes nine distinct and fundamentally different patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, called Types.

Learning our Enneagram Type launches us on an incredible journey of self discovery. Not only do we develop insight as to the ways we habitually think, feel and behave, we also come to understand our motivations, our strengths and our challenges in relating to others. Type cannot be determined by observing behaviors in yourself or others. It is by understanding what motivates those behaviors that we begin our journey of self discovery.

With a strong foundation in western psychology, and grounded in several wisdom traditions East and West, the Enneagram is an extraordinary and dynamic system to help us on our journey of transformation.

Over the weekend we will hear directly from live panelists about their experience of their Enneagram Type and what it means to use this understanding to improve relationships and to feel a deeper connection to themselves, others and life.

DATES: Saturday & Sunday, February 4th & 5th

TIMES: Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

COST: $245

REGISTER: Class size is limited; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Register online by clicking here.

Enneagram Instinctual Subtype Workshop with Panels

Prerequisite: Having taken Barbara's Basic Enneagram workshop, or having an understanding of the Enneagram.

Learning your Enneagram Type is just the beginning. The Enneagram is a complex and highly differentiated system, reflecting the complexity of human beings. The next step is to learn about the Instinctual Subtypes to further explicate Types by turning the nine basic Types into twenty-seven. In intimate relationships, learning the Instinctual Subtypes turns out to be as important as understanding the nine Types.

We will hear live panelists speak to the Self Preservation, Sexual/Attraction, and Social/Affiliative instincts that we all share as human beings. Then we will learn about how Type shows up through these Instinctual Subtypes, affecting relationships in predictable ways. By understanding these instinctual drivers, we can bring more balance and equanimity to our lives.

DATE: Saturday, March 3rd

TIME: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

COST: $155

REGISTER: Class size is limited; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Register online by clicking here.

Expanding Our Understanding of Type: Defenses, Wings and Connecting Points

Prerequisite: Having taken Barbara's Basic Enneagram workshop, or having an understanding of the Enneagram.

When we begin to observe ourselves closely, we see how compulsive our Type is. In this workshop, we will see what our focus of attention is, what we identify with, and what we avoid. We will explicate the Defenses of each Type, bringing into conscious awareness the lost parts of ourselves. We will look at the Security and Stress points (also called the Point of Integration and Disintegration) and the Wings as a means to expand our souls and the ways in which we live in the world.

To work more effectively with our Enneagram Types, we need to develop the ability to observe ourselves with honesty and compassion. In order to do this, we will learn Attention Practices that help us develop the Inner Observer that helps us see the habits of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are particular to our Type. With this knowledge, we can begin to improve relationships and see what prevents us from healthy relating and inner joy.

DATE: Coming again in 2012

Enneagram Study Group -- FULL (email to be waitlisted)

Pre-requisite: Knowing your type and having taken the Basic Enneagram Workshop or having a working understanding of the Enneagram.

Many of you have expressed interest in deepening your understanding and work with the Enneagram. This small group, with representation of each Type, will meet monthly to delve into aspects of the Enneagram that interest you (I have some ideas too!) and investigate some of the less obvious dimensions of the Enneagram. We may read and discuss short writings from some of the more obscure but seminal authors such as Naranjo and Gurdjieff, as well as authors on related topics. We will learn body and meditation practices to unblock our hearts and move towards greater liberation. I hope that the group will build the trust necessary to share our own struggles and strengths as we work to free ourselves from the fixation of our type.

DATES: Thursday mornings - Jan. 26, Feb. 23, Mar. 22, Apr. 19, and May 17

TIME: 9:00 am to 11:30 am

COST: $250

REGISTRATION: Please contact Barbara if you are interested in joining the group barbara@whitesideworkshops.com

The Enneagram of Parenting

Seeing Ourselves and Our Family Clearly: A Roadmap Toward Healthier Family Dynamics.

Family is a great petri dish for exploring Enneagram Type dynamics. Here in this crucible of intimate relatedness, we often experience our best and our worst selves. Patterns can be difficult to break when we are caught in a negative feedback loop. When triggered, we can fall into the habits of our type and begin to relate from that bias to our family members. Our family members respond from their own point bias and thus begins the negative feedback loop.

How can we break free of these old habits and bring something fresh to our intimate, often daily communications with loved ones? Seeing them and ourselves clearly and compassionately is the first step on the road to healthier family dynamics. Next we need to find a way to become truly present with the person, the situation and ourselves. Then we need to modify our communication style to fit the person we are interacting with. And this is just the beginning...

DATE: Coming again in 2012.

RECORDING: Barbara received excellent reviews for her presentation about family, communication and the Enneagram made at the International Enneagram Association Conference in San Francisco on August 1, 2010. You can purchase ($15) a recording of her presentation on CD by clicking here (Select IEA10-348 Seeing Ourselves and Our Family Clearly).

Wisdom Parenting - will come again soon

A Four Part series offered at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Burlingame

Part 1: Seeing Ourselves and Our Children Clearly: A Roadmap to Healthy and Holy Parenting

"I will walk in my house with a blameless heart." - Psalm 101-2, NIV

Family life is a crash course in the School of Love. In this crucible of intimate relatedness, we often experience our best and our worst selves. What can we do to bring soul back into family life? What does healthy and holy parenting look like? How can we break free of old habits and bring something fresh to our intimate, often daily communications with loved ones?

Part 2: Seeing Ourselves Clearly

"Love the child in front of you, not the one in your mind." - Wendy Mogel PhD

Parents view their children through the lens of their own personality. In so doing, they form judgments about their kids that are more often a reflection of their own biases rather than of their children. Until we can learn to lift the veil of our false self, we will approach parenting from a very disordered mindset. Is it possible to become more responsive to our children, and less reactive?

Part 3: Seeing Our Children Clearly

"The first duty of Love is to Listen." - Paul Tillich, theologian

We will learn how to deeply listen, see, and understand our child or teen from a place of compassion and curiosity rather than from judgment. The fertile soil in which souls can grow must be cultivated with genuineness, empathy, and acceptance. We will learn how to begin to connect or reconnect with our kids, from the inside out.

Part 4: Healthy and Holy Parenting

"The beginning of Love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our image." - Thomas Merton, Trappist Monk, author, poet, pioneer of interfaith understanding

Wise parenting is the perfect blend of love and intelligence. One only need to look into the world to see that offering love without intelligence often results in the tyranny of the spoiled child, while intelligence without love will never help a child grow into an adult capable of living in the world with compassion, wisdom, and love. We will look with newly opened eyes at practical parenting. With this new roadmap, parenting will take on another, more profound, dimension - one that more often fills our souls and leaves us enriched rather than drained by the everyday demands of family life.
